my name is zoe-agatha serrano a.k.a. sayuri "yuri" sakurada, i'm now a second year high school student (13 years old)
more about me:
- a CERTIFIED anime otaku
- a japanese fanatic (j-movies, j-pop, j-drama, j-celebrities etc.)
- an amateur tennis player

- a person who loves to sing and listen to japanese songs

sometimes, no, most of the time i'm weird.. i often cry then laugh afterwards (i love it!) then i also love to cook food until its black (not golden brown) lol that's how i cook so don't let me cook food for you.. i also cut my own hair for enjoyment and pleasure (a few months ago i cut my bangs, then i looked like a pineapple) but i enjoyed my experience of being a pineapple for months lol

Since it tells here in your page that you are interested with Japan, I'd like you to try reading novels written originally by Japanese authors. Some authors I might suggest you are Banana Yoshimoto, Haruki Murakami and Kenzaburo Oe. You can google them for their titles.
You can check my blog too for some cool books, I just reviewed "Hokkaido Highway Blues" a.k.a. "Hitching Rides with Buddha" which is all about a Canadian who had the goal of crossing Japan from the southern tip of the islands (Cape Seta) all the way to the northern tip in the island of Hokkaido. |

I don't know how it works in Philippine Universities, but Linguistics is basically the study of languages and how they work.
You will deal with the parts of the mental language - phonetics (study of sounds), phonology (study of the combination of sounds), syntax (grammatical analysis), morphology (study of words), and semantics (dealing with meaning). There are issues on discourse analysis (study of language in use), language acquisition (how a person acquires a 1st or 2nd language), psycholinguistics, sociolinguistics, language and gender, language in various contexts, and issues dealing with communication and language use.
You might be overwhelmed. But for me, in order to understand linguistics, I took a couple of language courses and focused more with Japanese and Spanish - two languages with different grammatical, sociolinguistic, cultural, and pragmatic makeups.
If you are interested in taking linguistics to learn Japanese, you might have a hard time. Japanese is a language that is not just all about grammar, it is a language that is rich in vocabulary and it's very complex when it comes to politeness levels and cultural expressions. I suggest you to back up your Japanese language course with another course in Japanese history, Japanese pop culture or Japanese culture and art. Same thing with other languages.
As you learn another language, you will have to change your own mentality. Speaking Japanese requires you to think like a Japanese speaker, and it's just the same with other languages.
And one big suggestion I would like to give you is that if you want to take linguistics, you must love communication because language is created for communicating. Example, Japanese is not created for anime or pop culture, it's created mainly for the everyday lives of Japanese people in all of their transactions and exchanges of knowledge. Think in those terms.
I hope I'm not scaring you off. I'm not taking linguistics in the Philippines. I'm taking it here in Canada and that is what I know about it.
